The Gifted & Talented Program
The gifted program at Oasis is a part time program designed to help gifted students reach their full potential. The program is a pull out program where students are pulled out of their regular education classrooms one full day weekly. In the gifted class students work on creative and critical thinking, creative problem solving, dramatic interpretation, scientific investigations, and self directed learning skills. We also connect learning to Core Knowledge concepts learned in the regular education classroom; we examine those concepts in greater depth. Students in the gifted program have individualized educational plans with goals and objectives that range from social-emotional to academic. Being in the gifted education classroom gives gifted students an opportunity to enhance and develop their creativity, imaginations, problem solving skills and cooperative and self directed learning skills in order to become successful students and citizens of our country.
To qualify for the gifted program students must demonstrate certain characteristics of gifted students as determined by the classroom teacher, parent or student. These characteristics include but are not limited to high verbal ability, questioning attitude, creativeness, originality, ability to focus in great depth on topics of particular interest, ability to make connections, curiosity, and has wild silly ideas. The student must also demonstrate high performance in class and on standardized tests. After these qualifications have been met the student is referred for an IQ test. If the student meets all criteria, the student will qualify for the gifted program and an individualized educational plan will be written.

I was born in NJ but raised in SW Florida. She taught fourth grade here at Oasis and loved it so much, she’s not only teaching 4th graders again, but K-5 as the gifted resource teacher! This year she has taken on the responsibility of Drama Director; a job she held for 7 years in the past, working with children ages 6-18. She is thrilled to be bringing theatre to our school. She has her Bachelors in Elementary Education, with certification in Drama and ESOL from FGCU. |
